basket1a

This style of basket is quite different, being based on a plait. The number of elements and their thickness in the plait determines its size. At each stroke, a new weaver is brought into the plait and one discarded.

The basket illustrated is a laundry basket, 40 cm diameter at the base and 60 at the rim, and made using 6 foot willows and six weavers in the initial plait. Keeping a uniform tension is important, but this requires strong hands and supple willow. The number of additional weavers introduced at the edge of the base and the way they are separated determines the size and shape of the basket.
