Creels were used on pack animals, both donkeys and horses, and by people. Their designs varied by region of making and use. Most had a gap, or 'window', but some were woven solid. The way in which the rods crossed the gap was partly an indication of origin, as was the shape of the bottom and the number of stakes. When used by people, they were carried using a chest strap rather than the now conventional shoulder straps. Some also had hinged bottoms to allow unloading without having to take the basket off.
